Information about sailing in all Australia's great states…
There are many opportunities for sailing in South Australia. Yachting Australia is strong in Adelaide and there are some fantastic opportunities to sail these clear waters. There is an enormous system of amazing waterways on the coast and the hinterland. Try sailing the great Murray River or cruise past the many great beaches to visit with the dolphins and view the mangroves and shipwrecks.
For sailing to some of the prettiest inlets and bays, only accessible by boat, go to Kangaroo Island, home to Australia's largest koala colony. For all-year-round protected Adelaide sailing, spend the day in Nepean Bay. For longer sails, the north coast has some spectacular anchorages. Try Penneshaw at Christmas Cove for overnight mooring. (Obtain overnight permits from Kangaroo Island or the Gateway Visitor Centre.)
If you like to get close to marine life, then sail Victoria to the Eyre Peninsula. Numerous birds and animals, seals and sea lions live here and you may even swim with them.
For the angler, you can find out the best boat fishing hotspots at the Adelaide Boat Show held every July at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Try Stansbury, Port Giles and Sultana Point for salmon, mullet and tommy ruffs. Garfish are plentiful in the summer as well as King George Whiting.
There are many one day sailing tours in Adelaide tailored to meet your needs. Just fifteen minutes from Adelaide, hire the Temptation, the first boat to hold a 'swim with the dolphins' licence. There are also many boats sailing the Murray River which you may join for an amazingly different holiday.
